Questions to ask a proposal photographer before you book

Most couples planning a Chicago proposal have never hired a proposal photographer before, so they have no way of knowing what separates a great one from someone who will simply show up.

The questions below are the ones worth asking. I have answered each the way I would answer it for you, so you can hear what a thorough answer actually sounds like.

01

How will you stay hidden during a surprise proposal?

Discretion is a skill, not luck. I scout the location ahead of time, choose a position with a clear sightline that reads as a passerby rather than a photographer, and work with a longer lens so I am never hovering. You should expect a photographer to walk you through their exact plan for your spot, not wave it off with "don't worry about it."

02

Do you edit the photos yourself, or outsource it?

I edit every gallery myself. Many studios send your images to an outside editing service, which is part of why the photos in a portfolio can look different from what you receive. Ask directly who touches your final images, and listen for a clear answer.

03

What happens if the timing shifts on the day?

Proposals rarely run on schedule. A dinner runs long, a train is late, nerves change the plan. My background is in theater, so reading a live moment and adjusting to it in real time is second nature. A fifteen minute change does not rattle the coverage. Ask how a photographer handles a moment that moves.

04

What is your plan if it rains?

Chicago weather is its own character. I build a backup location into the plan before the day, usually something covered that still photographs beautifully, so a forecast does not force a cancellation. Ask whether rain means a reschedule or a ready alternative.

05

How many photos will we get, and how soon?

You should get a clear number and a clear timeline, in writing. I deliver a full hand-edited gallery, and I send a small set of previews quickly so you have something to share while the full gallery is finished.

06

Do you know good proposal spots in Chicago, or do I choose?

Both. I know the locations that photograph well at the right hour, the ones that require a permit, and the quieter alternatives most photographers skip. If you already have a meaningful spot in mind, I will tell you honestly how it will photograph and when to time it.

07

Can you capture video as well as photos?

Yes. We offer photo and video together, with a second team member dedicated to video so neither one is compromised. If video matters to you, ask whether it is one person trying to do both jobs at once or a genuine two-person setup.

08

How far in advance should we book?

Popular dates fill early, especially around the holidays and during Chicago's best sunset months. I would reach out as soon as you have a rough date in mind, even before the details are locked.

If a photographer answers questions like these clearly and specifically, you are in good hands. If the answers stay vague, that tells you something too. When you are ready, I would love to hear about what you are planning.

If you want to go further before you reach out, here is how to choose a Chicago proposal photographer, and if you are flying in for the moment, how an out-of-state Chicago proposal comes together.
